Jaap Geuze paints
landscapes, seaviews etc. composed out of colours and structures. He
sort of manipulates our perception and invites us as it is to look
further and further behind the horizon that is shown. The abstract
composition in lines down and across the canvas shows us again and
again the barriers he is confronted with in his work. As ever on the
look out for light, a new horizon, the unraveling of the mystery of
life. Every human being has a right to a horizon. This is the
artist’s personal drive in continuing his work. In most of his
pictures barriers, sometimes consisting of rows of wood or
threatening clouds, are shown.
He never knows beforehand what the painting will be like, what
direction it will take. Sometimes everything has to get off and he
starts anew. A process of trial and error, a continuing process.
Painting in oil on canvas is a physically tiring but also very
exciting way of painting. Working wet in wet makes a direct contact
with the canvas possible, it confronts you in a direct way with your
own barriers and inhibitions. The result is unknown beforehand which
makes it all an exciting process. The chosen technique contributes
and even enhances the confronting nature of the works of art.
